스코틀랜드는 유럽의 북서쪽에 위치하며 영국을 이루는 네 지방 가운데 하나이다. 그레이트브리튼 섬의 북쪽 1/3을 차지하며 남쪽으로는 잉글랜드와 마주하고 있고, 동쪽에는 북해에 면해있으며, 북쪽과 서쪽은 대서양에 면해있다. 또한, 남서쪽은 노스해협과 아일랜드 해와 마주한다. 스코틀랜드는 잉글랜드의 속국이나 식민지, 또는 자치령이 아니다. 스코틀랜드와 잉글랜드는 1707년 연합법을 통해 합병할 당시 서로의 자치권을 보장하며 합병하였다. 교육 제도를 비롯하여 많은 행정적인 면에서 스코틀랜드와 잉글랜드는 분명히 분리되어 있다. 또한 국교도 잉글랜드는 성공회, 스코틀랜드는 장로회로 이 둘은 엄연히 다르다. 스코틀랜드는 자체 국회, 자체 국화(엉겅퀴), 자치 정부, (비공식) 자체 국가(플라워 어브 스코틀랜드)를 가지고 있으며, 잉글랜드와 대등한 관계에서 영국 연방을 구성하고 있다. 스코틀랜드의 수도는 에든버러이며, 영국내에서 두 번째, 유럽에서 여섯 번째로 큰 금융도시이다. 또한 스코틀랜드 내 문화 중심지이며, 18세기 스코틀랜드를 유럽의 상업, 지식, 산업의 중심지로 만든 스코틀랜드 계몽주의가 일어난 곳이기도 하다. 글래스고는 스코틀랜드의 가장 큰 도시이자, 영국 내에서 세 번째로 큰 대도시이며, 대영제국시대에는 유럽에서 네 번째로 큰 대도시이자 세계에서 가장 큰 산업도시중 하나였다. 지금은 41%의 스코틀랜드인이 거주하고 있는 글래스고 광역권의 중심지 구실을 하고 있다. 스코틀랜드의 바다는 북대서양과 북해쪽으로 나뉘어 있으며, 유럽연합에서 가장 많은 석유가 매장되어 있는 곳이다. 특히 석유 채굴은 스코틀랜드 제 3의 도시인 애버딘에서 활발하며, 애버딘은 유럽의 석유 수도로 불린다. 스코틀랜드 왕국은 1706년 12월 31일까지는 독립 왕국이었으나 1707년 연합법으로 잉글랜드 왕국과 연합왕국을 이루어 그레이트브리튼 왕국이 되었다. 특이하게도 스코틀랜드는 설날이 1월 1일이 아니라 1월 2일이다.
