  Armadale House - the end of an era in Portree Armadale House on Bank Street, Portree was built in the 1880s. It is contemporaneous with London's Tower Bridge, and shares the architectural flourish of a corbel on its corner. Until the end of 2007, it was the site of the hardware shop of D Stewart & Co. Stewarts had been trading in Portree since 1840, and had occupied this site for well over 100 years before closing their doors for the last time. Richard Webb's study of the building taken in 2005 69910 shows the last proprietor of the business, Alistair Iain Macdonald, standing on the pavement outside his shop, arms folded. He had worked there for more than 40 years, when time and competition finally overtook the old-fashioned ironmongery, gifts and general hardware format. The building lies empty - a sad sight on a cold and sleety February morning. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for it. Update - see 877143.
