40 mPittenweem Harbour Pittenweem's charter conferring its status as a royal burgh dates back to 1541, but it is clear from the historical record that the town's function as a harbour stretches back to at least 1228. Still a working harbour today, Pittenweem's fishing fleet depend on catches of prawn, lobster and crab, which are then exported to the European markets of France, Spain and Holland. Very little white fish is landed.

It stands beside beside the new fish market on the west harbour and both are owned by Fife council and run by the Fishermen's Mutual Association. Ice is required for keeping the catch fresh whilst at sea. The ice is delivered along the Archimedes screw and down the pipe straight into the ice hold on the boat.
