2 mEdinburgh Council building The old Midlothian County Council building from the days before regional reorganisation in the 1970s caused Edinburgh and Midlothian to part company. Midlothian built new Council offices on the opposite side of the street that were recently demolished. Lothian Region now uses the original Council building to house its registry of births, deaths and marriages (or as Edinburgh folk are wont to call it, "hatches, matches and despatches").

2 mDuke of Buccleuch statue Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch and 7th Duke of Queensberry K.G. (1806-1884) belonged to Midlothian's foremost landowning family. Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he was deeply conservative, like the writer, his namesake and blood-relation, Sir Walter Scott. In 1822, he hosted King George IV as a guest at his house, Dalkeith Palace. The first visit to Scotland of a reigning Hanoverian monarch since the 1745 rebellion was the brainchild of Scott the novelist and was intended to demonstrate the loyalty of Scottish Tories to the dynasty. Twenty years later, Buccleuch also hosted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their first visit to Scotland.
