23 mEx-NER J72 0-6-0T on pilot duties at York No. 68687 is an ex-NER Wilson Worsdell class E1 (LNER J72), built as No. 1747 in 4/1899, became LNER No. 8687 in 1946 and withdrawn 9/61. In previous years York's Station Pilots had been turned out painted and polished - but not by 1960. Note the sheet in the cab, to protect against the cold wind.

The line over the Scarborough Bridge to Scarborough, Hull etc. branches sharp right here and the tracks crossing under the engine are the Up Scarborough lines; behind the train is Waterworks Box, controlling this end of the Station. 'The Norseman' is the 09.45 Newcastle - King's Cross, with through coaches from Tyne Commission Quay conveying passengers off shipping services from Scandinavia. The locomotive is Gresley A3 4-6-2 No. 60039 'Sandwich' (built 9/34 as No. 2504, withdrawn 3/63).
