The two houses were built about 1758 by Alexander Stott, Burgess of Brechin. In 1888 the site and adjacent ground were acquired for the Cathedral congregation, and from 1904 to 1967 No 21 was occupied by a succession of Beadles.

The top floor has four windows which were enlarged in the 17th century when a peal of bells was installed. The tower is built of irregular blocks of local sandstone dressed to the curve.
