The "tram" is actually a funicular railway hauled by a cable concealed in the central slot in the roadway at this point. A funicular railway has two vehicles connected and counterbalance on a length of cable so that one descends as the other ascends. The Great Orme Tramway is in two sections, hence there is a total of four vehicles. Note that this car carries the number 5!

98 mGreat Orme Tramway The tramway comes up the steep hill from Old Road and curves round to join Ty Gwyn Road, which it follows all the way up to the Half Way Station. A series of inspection plates can be seen set in the concrete all the way round the curve of the tramlines 339621 The road to the left, in front of the phone box, is Wyddfyd Road, next, more or less on the level is the continuation of Ty Gwyn Road, and the steep hill is Old Road. Just out of sight to the right is Llwynon Road. The town and curve of the bay can be seen far below.
