61 mChrist Church, Welshpool Viewed from Powis Castle Park. This church stands just off the top of the High Street but is out of sight from much of the town. It is clearly visible from across the valley in Leighton SJ2405 and from southern approaches to the town. When I first spotted it standing out above the tree tops I thought it was a castle or folly. The church was built in 1839-44, to designs by Thomas Penson (County Surveyor), using stone from the quarry at the top of Brook Street. Further architectural details are available here http://www.cpat.org.uk/ycom/wpool/30644.htm The interior suffered from dry rot and it closed in 1999 because funds could not be found for repair. Since then it has been bought by a young family who have great plans for renovations and are living in a home constructed inside the church http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/mid/7417652.stm Other photos http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=5397419

120 mSign for the Wellington, Welshpool Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was a British national hero after his defeat of Napoleon 1 at Waterloo, 1815. He had earlier had a distinguished military career in India and Spain. Between 1828-30 he was prime minister, later he was foreign secretary 1834-35. His popularity may be judged by the fact that he is mentioned on more pub signs than anyone except Lord Nelson.

122 m8-11 High Street, Welshpool Timber framed buildings dating from the early 16th century. Although altered and restored they retain their old charm. No 8, now "The Buttery" restaurant was for many years the Cross Keys Inn. Part of a beam on a passage wall bears a legend dated back to the Civil War. Early records puts 9 & 10 as the town house of Kynaston 'The Wild' in the time of King Henry VIII (1509-47). It was the Upper Sun public house in 1757, and was a lodging house in 1881. Restored in 1927, after a period as a toy shop and workshop. it was reopened as 'Prentice Trades' a cafe and art shop.
