This is the Summer Saturday 08.35 Ilfracombe via Taunton and Bristol (Temple Meads) to Manchester (Exchange), making for the Severn Tunnel then north from Newport (Maindee East Junction). The locomotive is a - very shabby - 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5071 'Spitfire' (built 6/38 as 'Clifford Castle', renamed 9/40, recently fitted with a double-chimney, withdrawn 10/63).

'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4913 'Baglan Hall' (built 2/29, withdrawn a month after this photograph) has probably taken over this train at Temple Mead. The train left Newquay at 08.00 and did not reach Manchester (Piccadilly) until about 19.30, via the Severn Tunnel, Hereford, Shrewsbury and Crewe - a pretty awful journey especially for those with children, but quicker than by road.

Looking in run-down condition itself but with two years still to go, GW Collett 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 4077 'Chepstow Castle' (built 2/24, withdrawn 8/62) is working a breakdown train from the direction of Filton Junction, on the ex-GWR main lines from South Wales, Birmingham and London (via Badminton) on a 1960 Summer Saturday.

This is a typical Summer Saturday holiday express, taking the Filton route out of Bristol to Yate and thence north towards Gloucester, Birmingham etc. The locomotive is Hughes/Fowler 5P4F 2-6-0 No. 42798. (The splendid noise it made - together with that of many other steam locomotives of the early 1960s, I tape-recorded at the time and hope to make available).
