The engine is Collett '5700' class 0-6-0PT No. 8746 (built 7/31, withdrawn 12/62). The bridge crossing carries the ex-Midland main line to Birmingham via Mangotsfield.

The express northbound on the Up Fast ex-Great Western line is a Summer Saturday relief from Paignton to Kidsgrove (Staffs.), headed by Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 45301 that will have taken over the train at St Philip's Marsh on the Bristol Relief Line and is climbing up via Filton Junction and Stoke Gifford (now Bristol Parkway) to regain the Midland route at Yate.

Hawksworth 'Modified Hall' 4-6-0 No. 7921 'Edstone Hall' (built 4/50, withdrawn 12/63) is heading the 12.55 Summer Saturdays from Paignton to Wolverhampton Low Level (due c. 19.15), which will run up here to Filton Junction, round to Yate and to Gloucester South Junction, then to Cheltenham and via Stratford-on-Avon on to Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Ahead is the ex-Midland dircet main line out of Temple Meads to Mangotsfield etc., subsequently dispensed with.
