0 mPont Glyn-diffwys A fantastic bridge over an extremely deep chasm carved through the rocks by the Afon Ceirw. The parapet is deemed to be unable to sustain modern hazards and has been 'reinforced' with this unsightly steel barrier. Utter vandalism!
-
0 mMemorial to the Tithe Martyrs of Llangwm The date, 27th May 1887; the setting, the Tithe riots - large mobs of increasingly desperate men & women against an intransigent Ecclesiastical Commission. "At Pont-y-Glyn, there is a sheer drop of about 60 feet to the rocks and the river below. Some of the now frenzied mob urged the men holding the Ecclesiastical Commission auctioneer, Joseph ap Mwrog, to throw him over, others wanted him dangled from the bridge by his feet until he promised to comply with their demands. Thomas Thomas, William Williams and other leaders among the anti-tithers movement attempted to protect Joseph & valuer Edward Vaughan, and restrain the crowd from further violence. Thomas Thomas, the postmaster at Ty Nant, negiotiated with the crowd and Joseph ap Mwrog was eventually allowed to speak provided that he should go on his knees, beg for mercy and promise never to visit Llangwm for such a purpose again. The crowd insisted that he must provide the promise in writing. Someone handed Joseph a scrap of paper and Thomas Thomas gave a him a pencil. On the paper which was signed and handed to Thomas Thomas were the words, We hereby promise not to come on this business again in any part of England or Wales, to sell for tithes. E. J. Roberts. Wellington Chambers, Rhyl; Edward Vaughan. Baths, Rhyl. As a result of the fracas at Llangwm thirty-one men faced charges of assault and riot and eight were brought to trial at the Ruthin Assizes in February 1888." [Joseph ap Mwrog failed to keep his promise.]

10 mPont-y-glyn from below - Tithe Martyr's Memorial bridge The bridge was listed as unsafe for vehicle traffic when this photo was taken. Access for this view is from the Afon Ceirw riverbank on the left on the upstream side.
-
10 mPont Glyn-diffwys 2 It is difficult to get any real view of this wonderful bridge. The gorge of the Afon Ceirw is so steep that to stray far from the road is exceptionally hazardous. Luckily the lack of leaves is working in my favour in this side view, but the depth of the gorge cannot be captured easily. For a view from below see 367900.
-
41 mTelford's road The construction of the Glyn Bends diversion was forced by the deterioration of the riverside wall, which was remarkable for lasting as long as it did. Thomas Telford's historic road to Ireland is now reduced to a footpath - which is good because his original route can now be savoured as never before.

-
200 mGlyn Bends construction The story of the A5 diversion at Ty Nant has a long history. In Eirian's image we see the failed cutting slope and a considerable landslip 260889. In Eric's image we see work on the total removal of the landslipped section 479660, and the completed work and the re-profiled cutting in my own 1237336. Here we go back to May 1995 and the original construction just to the south-east of the failed slope. The drilling rig is installing ground anchors to tie together the faulted blocks of Silurian mudstone. One of the anchors can be seen protruding from a freshly-drilled hole just above the rig. The flat, triangular areas on the rock face are the outcrops of the faults which ultimately overcame the ground anchors and slipped again. A classic tale of ingenuity overcome by the complexity of real ground conditions. The image was captured, with permission, during an excursion of the North Wales Geology Association.
-
224 mCutting works completed Eric Jones' image 479660of the new rock-cut in progress is complemented by this view of the completed works. Removal of the landslipped area and re-profiling have solved the problem of how to stabilise the faulted ground. For a historical view of the original construction, and the poor ground conditions, view 1240287.
