1.1 kmDual carriageway to Llywel Leaving the army land, the Tirabad to Llywel road drops down to Llywel on a single-track dual-carriageway, if that is not an oxymoron. The road to the left appears to be the original lane. Sometime after the army arrived the amount of their traffic using this lane grew, as this is their main access to the training area from the A40. So a new lane was created on the right, thus widening the road but avoiding the need to remove the hedge. It continues for nearly two kilometres. It is well known in motor rallying circles, where spectator directions to stages on the Epynt often refer to "use the Llywel dual-carriageway" or words to that effect.
-
1.2 kmEpynt Way leg 6 and boundary fence Looking back down the fence line towards the starting point of leg 6 of the Epynt Way. It starts at the car parkon the main Llywel road that crosses behind the buildings in the distance. The Epynt Way runs around the MOD Sennybridge Training Area, mostly on the MOD land just inside the perimeter fence. Any fence that separates civilian land from the danger area has red discs attached.

1.2 kmLay-by and lookout on M.O.D land near Llywel This is the south end of the restricted crossing from Tirabad to Llywel. There are no public car parks all the way through the Sennybridge training area until this point. Here there is an information point about the history and nature of the area. Just visible to the right of shot is the red flag accompanying the crossing point for those travelling north into this area.
-
1.3 kmSt. David's Church at Llywel St. David's Church stands in the extreme south-east of this grid-square at the foot of the military road leading onto the Epynt Ranges and can be seen from the A40. The current building is largely 15th Century, but contains earlier elements, including a pre-Norman font. According to legend, the church was founded in the sixth century by saint Llywel, a disciple of St. Teilo and was originally dedicated to Ss. David, Darn and Teilo. It is mentioned by Gerald of Wales for having been burnt down in the late twelfth century.

1.5 kmFootbridges over Nant Gwydderig Leg 6 of the Epynt Way crosses two parts of Nant Gwydderig at the low point here. A flat bridge covered in gravel is visible in the foreground. A traditional wooden railed bridge is also pictured at the back of the field, left of centre.

1.5 kmDerelict motel at Llywel Greystones Motel (Trecastle Services) stands on the A40 opposite the turning to Llywel, in the north-west of this square. It has been abandoned since at least the mid '90s, and during the Foot and Mouth Disease Crisis of 2001 was used first as a police base, then by protesters against the burning and burial of infected livestock on the nearby Epynt Ranges.

1.8 kmSunset from the Llywel to Tirabad road From a car park just off the Llywel to Tirabad road in this square. In the foreground is the last part of the rough grazing land in the army training area, before the land falls away into enclosed pasture in Nant y Gynnen, with the northern slopes of Y Pigwn SN8231 seen on the far side of the valley. That hillside directly below the sun is still a green square (at 21/02/2009) but I'm not claiming a viewbag for it!

1.8 kmGrazing land by Nant Gwydderig This valley, the Cwm Dyr, forms the east-west through-route followed by the A40 in modern times.

2.0 kmEpynt Way marker #625 While travelling anticlockwise around the ascending numbered marker posts, don't forget to look behind you occasionally. At the top of this ascent you get a great view of the Bannau (pictured) or even the Brecon Beacons.
-
2.0 kmOld road to Llywel The improved military road is off to the left. This is part of the old road, shown on the 1:25K map. Most of the square is rough grazing.

2.1 kmOld road to Llywel 07:20 and there was a lot of mist so this square wasn't really ready to be photographed. I had to come back at the end of the day. See [[[1173305]]]

2.1 kmOld National School, Trecastell/Trecastle An imposing Victorian School built 1861 in Gothic style. It incorporated a clock tower (no excuses for being late!) and teacher's dwelling.

2.1 km"Kingdom of Rust" antiques and salvage Vast trove of bygones, collectables and antiques under the roof of equally superannuated old school building. A happy hunting ground for just about everything you ever thought you might want and probably don't need.
