  Ratcheugh Observatory The observatory that stands at Ratcheugh Crag near Longhoughton is thought by many to be a folly, but was in fact built by the famous architect Robert Adam in 1784 for The Duke of Northumberland to use as a stopping off point during long carriage drives around his estate. Its main feature is a large elevated room with windows on all sides that provides spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
