0 mThe historic Ford at Montgomery (Welsh = Rhyd Chwima = the swift ford), near to Garthmyl, Powys, Great Britain. The ford from England to mid Wales across the River Severn used for at least 2000 years (until c1886). The main meeting place between the representatives of King Henry 3 and Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, last Welsh Prince of Wales, in the mid 13th century. Where the Treaty of Montgomery, granting Wales considerable autonomy, was signed on 29th Sept 1267......and much else!

234 mRailway bridge over the B4385 This railway bridge has created a complex junction of minor roads as its placement has necessitated a kink in the B4385 while the railway embankment further reduces visibility for vehicles emerging from the B4386 on the left and the Caerhowel road the other side of the bridge.

263 mRemnants of pre1854 Caerhowel Bridge The wooden bridge across the River Severn was swept away by a flood in 1852. It was replaced by a modern design bridge a few yards upstream in 1852. The County Surveyor for Montgomeryshire (Thomas Penson) warned that the design was flawed. And indeed the bridge collapsed within four years and was replaced by the current bridge, designed by Penson, in 1858. The remnants of the wooden bridge were swept against the east bank of the river and were revealed in 2006 after another severe flood.

306 mCast iron's little helper This magnificent cast iron bridge was built in an age of horse carts and traps and stood no chance when it came to carrying modern loads. The present concrete carriageway is carried on rolled steel joists which are cushioned onto the stone abutments with the original cast iron just there to look good. The picture shows the cast iron works with the modern rolled steel joists (painted a darker grey) inside. I'm sure that Telford and all the later county Surveyors, Thomas Penson among them would have used rolled steel if it were available, but in the 19th century cast iron was king. Those surveyors would have neverdreamed of the 15 tonne farm cart or the 38 tonne lorry for that matter.

316 mCaerhowel Smithy Grade 2 listed as a "substantial secular 17th century cottage". Timber framed with most original and early features intact. The Smithy was originally linked to the nearby Court Calmore farm - originally built by Chirbury Priory around 1255. The building seems to have been built as the farm smithy and functioned as a (private)smithy/motor repair business until the 1930's. A right of way leads directly to, but not across, the smithy boundary.

339 mWarning on the bridge Placed near the centre of Caerhowel bridge http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/611382 - perhaps not the most sensible location - this cast iron notice reads County of Montgomery TAKE NOTICE that this COUNTY BRIDGE is insufficient to carry weights beyond the ordinary traffic of the district, and that owners and persons in charge of locomotives, traction engines, or other ponderous carriages, are warned against attempting the passage of the bridge. By order of the County Council. C. A. Hutchins, County Surveyor.

339 mCaerhowel Bridge over the Severn Carrying the B4385 from Montgomery to Garthmyl. The bridge has two cast iron date plaques which read "Thomas Penson County Surveyor 1858" and "Brymbo Company Iron Founders 1858". It also carries a warning sign about heavy vehicles http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/611383 .

344 mPerfection in cast iron By the mid 19th century the surveyors and iron masters working in the Welsh Marches had fine tuned the use of cast iron to produce magnificent bridges such as this one at Caerhowel. Their beautiful symmetry and fineness of structure had never been seen before, or since for that matter. This is one of the best that was made at The Brymbo Works. http://www.bhg.org.uk/BrymboHeritage/IndustrialHistory/Steelworks/Steelworks.htm The river in mid winter looks cold and menacing compared to the wonderful blues of summer.
