The westbound carriageways a lot higher than the eastbound and they couldnt get the two to sit together thats why it parts. So it was only geography that saved the place. The smaller jet of water at the bottom is the compensation flow (to guarantee a minimum flow in the river downstream of the dam). Unlike the nearby Ryburn dam 1160202 where the whole downstream face of the dam is stepped to break up the energy of the flow, at Boothwood the face of the concrete dam is smooth, and with a modest overflow rate like this the energy is dissipated in the stilling pool. The blocks in the foreground come into play at times of very heavy overflow to absorb more of the energy of the flow.
