Born at Glendinning, Westerkirk, Langholm A pioneering Civil Engineer whose lasting legacy of roads, bridges, canals and buildings constructed throughout his extensive career ensures his place in the history of the industrial revolution. 807 mThe Telford Cairn This stone cairn is built on the hillside to the west of Meggat Water at Glendinning near Langholm. It was constructed in 2007 to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the famous civil engineer Thomas Telford. The son of a shepherd, he was born at Glendinning on 9th August 1757. Telford, who was an apprentice stonemason at Langholm, moved to Edinburgh at the age of 23 and then 2 years later to London to study architecture and engineering. In 1801 he was commissioned to return to Scotland to carry out a survey of the Highlands and in 18 years he constructed over 1000 miles of roads, 17 major bridges and over 1100 minor bridges. His work also included harbours and the construction of the Caledonian Canal. A founder member and first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he died on 2nd September 1834 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. The cairn is signposted from the B709 at Enzieholm Bridge. (Source: information board at site car park).
